Yucatán Top Ten: October 2019

Autoprogreso Saturday, September 28, 2019

Between October 25 and November 2, enjoy the Hanal Pixán celebrations.

You can’t miss the Paseo de las Ánimas, or the altar exhibit in the Plaza Grande; this is a festivity without compare. Migratory birds start visiting Yucatán in October and bird watching season begins! If this is your hobby, read our editorial on page 7 about a guide innovating in ecotourism. Throughout this month, the Lucas de Galvez market is the best place to see the altar preparations up close and to buy colorful flags and flowers.

Make sure to stop by. Travel to El Cuyo for that dose of peace and quiet.

It is one of the last beaches before you reach Quintana Roo and is well known for having beautiful sunsets. Try this season’s traditional dish: Mucbil Pollo, or Pib.

It is essentially a giant Tamal which is baked in an underground oven to give it an unbelievable smoky taste. Go on the new Tour Cantinero which leaves from the Plaza Grande.

This tour takes you to three of the most important breweries in town: Ceiba, Patito, and Nación Brava. The Maya believed that cenotes and caves were passages to the underworld.

Connect with this ancient belief and swim in one of the many cenotes near Homún. Spend an afternoon of shopping and entertainment at The Harbor, and don’t miss the dancing fountain show Thursday to Saturday at 8:30 pm, and Sunday at 7 pm. Discover the site of Ek Balam, it has multiple representations of life and death including an earth monster with an open mouth, considered as one of the entrances to the underworld. This month, check out Peto in the south of Yucatán.
